Surveying the Land

At a glance, Guayaquil, Ecuador, looks very similar to many cities in the United States. As you drive through the city, you pass banks, fast food restaurants, malls, and schools. Highways are crowded with cars, taxis, buses, and motorcycles. Driving outside of the city center, the more rural areas are green and full of beautiful foliage. Because Guayaquil is coastal, the climate is tropical with warm temperatures even in the winter months.

Learning the Language

Although there are many indigenous languages and dialects in Ecuador, Spanish is the primary language spoken throughout Guayaquil. The primary sign language used by Deaf people is called Lengua de Señas Ecuatoriana (LSEC). This sign language shares many signs with American Sign Language (ASL).

Reaching the Lost

Throughout Ecuador, there is much awareness of religion. Most Ecuadoreans identify as Catholic. In Guayaquil, Catholic churches and cathedrals are plentiful. There are also people involved with religions and cults as well including Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Despite this, there are open doors and open hearts to the gospel.

Our mission teams are partnering with a vibrant local ministry to reach the lost in Guayaquil. Through the ministry there, many souls have been saved and lives changed for eternity!
